Biography

Ms. Gifford joined the College of Nursing and Health Professions staff in March 2014 and is an academic advisor for students in the BSN program. She holds a master’s degree in English and a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature with teaching and research interests in first-year English composition, multimodal composition, the theories and rhetoric of gender and sexuality, and academic advising. She has taught first-year English composition at Purdue Northwest and has also been a certified substitute teacher. Her most recent work within the field of academic advising includes reviewing a chapter for a 2021 publication, a poster presentation, a juried art exhibition, a short story for a pocket guide, and work as a content developer. Her awards include first place in The Stark-Tinkham Writing Awards Graduate Critical Essay in 2009 and 2010 and the Laura McMullen Cross Scholarship from Wichita State University. Ms. Gifford is currently a member of NACADA, Valparaiso University’s Council of Academic Advisors, Staff Employee Advocacy Council (SEAC), and the Presidential Commission for an Inclusive Valparaiso Community (CIVC).
