Gregg Sherrill Manufacturing Case Competition

Students in the College of Business have an opportunity to participate in an intercollegiate competition focused on supply chain management. Each spring, top-performing students from our Global Logistics Management course are selected to represent Valpo in the Gregg Sherrill Manufacturing Case Competition.

Hosted annually in Bloomington, Indiana, the competition brings together undergraduate students from universities across the Midwest to tackle complex, real-world manufacturing challenges. With guidance from the instructor and feedback from leading industry judges, students apply their academic knowledge to current issues and gain exposure to the multifaceted nature of supply chain management.

“This competition is an outstanding platform for our students to showcase their analytical, teamwork, and presentation skills on a regional stage,” says Ata Karbasi, Ph.D., assistant professor of information and decision sciences, who teaches the aforementioned course. “It helps them prepare for future leadership roles by working on real case studies while also connecting with students from other universities and professionals in the industry.”

Students Achieve Excellence in Microsoft Excel

Business students also have an opportunity to complete Microsoft Office 365 Excel certification, a proctored, standards-based exam. The state’s highest-scoring individual is named the champion, and Valpo has a reputation for preparing students who shine with excellence:

  • During the fall 2024 semester, Aidan Ross ’25 was named the Indiana State Champion in Excel, achieving a perfect score on the exam and the fastest time in Indiana. Valpo business students also earned the second-, sixth-, and eighth-highest scores in the state.
  • During the spring 2024 semester, Savannah Gostlin ’25 earned second place in Indiana on the Excel exam. Five additional Valpo business students also placed among the top 10 highest scores in the state.

As part of Valparaiso University’s industry certification program, the College of Business also guides students on certification for Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
