Academic Support
Chemistry courses at Valpo are demanding, and the department wants every student to succeed. To facilitate that success, a number of academic support opportunities are available.
Faculty Office Hours
All faculty hold office hours or are available by appointment to help students. This is one tremendous benefit of being a student at a school like Valpo. You can directly interact with the professors that teach your courses. Having these interactions helps faculty learn to know you and better understand your specific situation and challenges.
Supplemental Instruction
In addition to professor office hours and department-sponsored help sessions, students can take advantage of free resources through Valpo’s Academic Success Center. Several times a week, experienced chemistry students lead group review sessions available to all students enrolled in:
- CHEM 111, Introduction to Chemistry
- CHEM 121, General Chemistry I
- CHEM 122, General Chemistry I
- CHEM 221, Organic Chemistry I
- CHEM 222, Organic Chemistry II
Peer Tutoring
Students who have attended Supplemental Instruction sessions and find that they need more focused help can apply for the Peer Tutoring Program. This student-tutor match program provides weekly tutoring sessions in a small group setting. Interested students apply through the Academic Success Center.
