African Artifacts
From Two Private Collections
The Brauer Museum of Art is pleased to present African Artifacts from Two Private Collections. This virtual exhibition highlights historically important pieces drawn from the collections of collectors passionate about their activity and discerning in their tastes. Through their collecting efforts, Maxwell Price and Lawrence P. Kolton acquired rare and important works that give an overview of styles and media used by tribal artists.
Maxwell Price is an accomplished and celebrated jazz musician who was also a longtime dealer of tribal and pre-Columbian artifacts on the West Coast. Currently based in Belgium, Price provides expert assessment of African pieces and continues to add to his own collection.
Lawrence P. Kolton was an artist, Chicago antique dealer, trade display specialist, world traveler, and independent dealer and collector of African, Oceanic, and Chinese artifacts. He is survived by his wife Rachel Angotti, a former Northwest Indiana Postmaster, who maintains the collection. This virtual exhibition is dedicated to Lawrence P. Kolton.
We at the Brauer Museum wish to thank Maxwell Price, Lawrence P. Kolton, and Rachel Angotti for generously allowing these works to be featured in our exhibition. We also wish to thank bookseller Douglas Wilson for introducing Price to the Brauer. Finally, we are grateful to Laura Krepp, Aran Kessler, and Jon L. Hendricks for making this virtual exhibition possible through their fine work.
