Welcome
Each semester, Valparaiso University offers a number of courses online through its web site. These courses can provide added flexibility for students who have difficulty taking courses at certain times during the day, are limited in their ability to travel to campus frequently, or prefer learning under a less structured framework.
Online courses range across departments, colleges, and programs and are designated in the Schedule of Classes with OL in the section column. Some fulfill the University's general education requirements, others may be used toward major or minor requirements, and others may count simply as electives. Many are geared toward students in their first or second years of study, but there are graduate courses as well. The selection of online courses is typically greater during the summer sessions in order to accommodate students who want to enroll in VU courses while living in their hometown or near their work site.
Although online courses do not follow the traditional lecture format, students should not assume they are easier, less demanding, or less time-consuming than regular courses. On the contrary, success in online courses typically requires a high level of discipline and motivation, and enough time each week to complete the assignments.
Requirements for Access
Most online courses at Valpo are supported by Blackboard courseware. In order to gain access, you will need a computer set up that meets minimal requirements, an internet connection, browser, software, and VU Mail. More detailed information about the required hardware and software is available online at the Information Technology Blackboard instructions page.
Enrolling in Online Courses
Current VU Students
Online courses are open to any full-time or College of Adult Scholar student enrolled at the University. Current students register for online courses just as they would for any other course and pay the same tuition rate.
VU Alumni
Valpo alumni are cordially invited to take online courses at Valparaiso University, which may serve lifelong learning needs and contribute to professional development and/or personal enrichment. The procedure for enrolling is easy:
- Fill out an online application for the College of Adult Scholars (Continuing Education) program. If you have an undergraduate degree from VU, acceptance into the College of Adult Scholars program is guaranteed under most circumstances. If you prefer to earn graduate credit for the course, fill out the online application for the Graduate Division, but note that you must meet higher admission criteria. For either application, the fee is waived for VU alumni for online coursework. Once we've received your application, we will notify you of your acceptance into the College of Adult Scholars or Graduate Division via email and include a registration template and biographical data sheet. Email us or call our toll free number 1.800.821.7685, to set up a phone appointment with an academic adviser to briefly discuss your course selection(s). They will help ensure that the course matches your interests and needs, that you meet any necessary prerequisites, and that there is space available in the course. After speaking with the adviser, return the registration template and "bio" sheet via email, making sure all information is provided. Most undergraduate courses provide the option of S/U grading; however graduate courses generally do not. Also make sure you select one of the tuition rate options (see below).
- Once we've received all the required information, we will notify you of your registration status via email. Student Accounts will send you a bill, or you may pay in advance with a credit card by calling 219.464.5221

Non-VU Students
If you are not currently a VU student or alum but wish to take an online course, we welcome your further inquiry. The application and admission process is not complicated, and if you so choose, most of it can be completed online for either the
College of Adult Scholars or the
Graduate Division. If you are applying for admission specifically to take an online course, please note this on Part VI (Essay) of your application. If you qualify for admission to the College of Adult Scholars or the Graduate Division, the same tuition rates listed below apply. For more information, contact us at
Graduate.Studies@valpo.edu or call us toll free at 1.800.821.7685.
Tuition and Fees
A special rate applies for courses offered during the summer sessions. The high number of online courses during the summer means they are less likely to fill to capacity than online fall/spring offerings.
- Summer tuition rate is $395 per credit hour. This rate is available only during the summer and applies to all undergrad courses, with the exception of on-line coursework. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis.
- Summer tuition rate for on-line courses is $415 per credit hour. This rate is charged for all undergraduates and College of Adult Scholar students taking summer on-line coursework during Summer Session I and Summer Session II. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis
VU students in the Graduate Division pay $480 per credit hour for all classes, except for courses offered through the College of Nursing, which cost $565 per credit hour. Enrollment for graduate courses is usually on a first come, first served basis. Students must meet prerequisites for all courses. In addition to tuition, a $95 administrative fee is required each semester.
