BACCHUS

Because we care!

Valpo's local chapter of Bacchus (Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students) is part of a national student organization, which since spring academic semester of 1990 has had an active, recognized chapter at Valparaiso University.

One of the goals of BACCHUS is to confront commonly shared and often dangerous attitudes towards drinking that can make an entire college community tolerant of irresponsibility. BACCHUS encourages moderation, the use of positive peer pressure to discourage irresponsible use of alcohol, and the promotion of alternative social behavior patterns. The group currently meets weekly in addition to the programs and activities that it sponsors. Part of the BACCHUS philosophy is that students can play a uniquely effective role--unmatched by professional educators--in encouraging their peers to talk honestly about and develop responsible attitudes toward the use or non-use of alcohol. We make an effort to work closely with and be involved with as many other student groups as possible, including Union Board, Student Senate, the Greek system, the Muslim Student Association, VISA, and other campus groups.

Members of BACCHUS are involved in freshman orientation, with middle school students in the community, the Spring Break Awareness Campaign, in BACCHUS bars (non-alcoholic beverage service), and other services to the campus and the community. The club is open to all with the condition that members be willing to model moderate behavior. If you are interested in checking out the club, please call OADE at 464-6820, and leave your name, number or email address. A BACCHUS representative will contact you.
