TEACHING OF ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (TESOL) CERTIFICATE
TESOL ClassProgram Description
The 15-credit graduate TESOL certificate is available to degree and non-degree students in the Graduate Division, including international students and members of the Northwest Indiana community. Students in programs with a language or international focus (i.e., International Commerce & Policy; English Studies; MALS) may benefit most from the certificate.

Students in the Master of Arts in English Studies & Communication program may apply up to 12 credits from their degree towards the TESOL certificate. Students in other degree programs may typically apply 6-9 credits from their degree toward the certificate. The TESOL program may not prepare students for teaching in states that require a TESOL endorsement.

Criteria for Admission
Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate Division, which include:

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited University;
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 550 (paper version), 230 (computer-based), or Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT) score of at least 80; minimum IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6; CET score of 6, or an INTERLINK Language Center Level 5, or the equivalent for non-native English speakers;
  • An overall grade point average of at least a 3.00;
  • Evidence of prior experience learning a foreign laguage.

Students currently or previously enrolled in a graduate degree program at Valparaiso University need only to submit:

  • Valparaiso University Graduate Application;
  • Official transcripts of all prior undergraduate and graduate coursework.  If you have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from Valparaiso University, you are not required to submit an official transcript from Valparaiso University;
  • Application Fee: $30 for U.S. citizens, $50 for International Students.

All other applicants must submit:

  • Valparaiso University Graduate Application;
  • Official transcripts of all prior undergraduate and graduate coursework.  If you have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from Valparaiso University, you are not required to submit an official transcript from Valparaiso University;
  • One letter of reference;
  • A reflective essay detailing your reasons for pursuing graduate study;
  • Application Fee: $30 for U.S. citizens, $50 for International Students.

Financial Considerations
Tuition for the TESOL graduate certificate is approximately $6,750.
